My Green Thumb

I really don't have much of a green thumb. I only have a few plants around the house. I got my first plant my second year working at GH. A coworker and friend gave me a lucky bamboo for Christmas. I named him Henry (don't ask or make fun, it's a Baldwin thing) and he is still alive.
(This is Potter, on the left, Henry is in the middle, and the Aloe Vera plant is Patrick)

Over the years I have accumulated several more and they are all alive as well.
This is Durwood Kirby, I'm really not sure who he is named after, Kat helped me.

This is Fredrick,

and Quoxzy.

Briant gets a plant every year from Frank for his birthday, but I water them.

Oh, and I can't forget about this little bunch; water cress that my Aunt gave me to grow.
They don't look as good as hers but, what can I say, she's had more experience.
I'm sure that most of you knew my Grandparents. Well, they had a HUGE garden that they spent a good part of their time in. The food that came out of it was by far the best you have ever tasted. Grandma & Grandpa taught my Mom and my Aunt Pam (and all their other kids) how to garden, and they have amazing gardens too. Why am I telling you all of this? Well, now that I am married and have a house with a yard, I am going to start my own garden this year. For a couple years now I have wanted to do this and so I am very excited and can't wait for all the snow to melt!
My Aunt Pam just created a Blog called Gardening Tips and I was reading it the other day. One of the tips she suggested was to start planning now and to prepare ahead of time. This got me really excited. So I began planning.
I'm going to plant; of coarse Tomatoes (big and little), Green Peppers, Onions (I bet you never thought you'd hear me say that, huh?), Carrots, Radishes, Cucumbers, Peas, and Green Beans. I think I might have room to plant something else, but I haven't decided. Any ideas?
I don't plan on making my garden too big because I am making a goal not to waste food. So I'm going to start out small, so I can handle it, and eventually get bigger. I want to spend at least 15 minutes in my garden every day. I'm hoping this will prove to be a relaxing hobby for me where I can go to think and contemplate. But if Briant wants to help me weed, I definitely won't object.
Briant says he doesn't like peas, oh darn... more for me. I plan on harvesting all the veggies (that I don't eat) this fall and I want to learn how to store and freeze them, so I don't have to buy any next winter. My mom can help me with this, she has been doing it all my life, what a good example.
I am so thankful to my Mom, and Aunt who have taught me so much about gardening. I hope I do them and my Grandparents proud, and I'm hoping they gave me all their gardening genes.
So in all reality I don't have much of a green thumb... yet!

Derwood Kerby is what we call my fruit cake of an Uncle. I am not sure who made it up or where that name came from, but there you have it!
Hey, how about zucchini?

I've been thinking about my garden lately too! I really got into canning this year so I plan on making it bigger than ever! Good idea to lay it all out in advance- most of the time I end up standing in the middle of my freshly tilled garden seed packets in hand trying to figure out where to put everything...

Good for you Missy, I think you have a good start. I love your map!!!! Hey, about Zucchini, they have a bush Zucchini that is called 8 ball that you could plant in a corner. And you can plant a pumpkin near the edge and let most of it go out on the lawn.

I love that you named your house plants. I did that too, until they all died. (too many moves). But I still love it.
